Too Important Not to Note

Although my trade union work is kicking my ass right now, I felt that the following two events were too important to pass up mentioning. Firstly, today marks the 35th anniversary of the first day of the Attica Prision uprising. I'll post a more substantive piece later in the week to commeorate the 29 heroes who were murdered when the pigs retook the prision 4 days later.

Secondly, today is the 30th anniversary of Chairman Mao Tse-tung's death. Also, was I the only one who didn't know that Mike Tyson has a Mao tattoo?

Nelson -- You're definitely late to the party on knowledge of Mike Tyson's tattoos. I don't know much about boxing, but isn't it also correct to say that Tyson himself turned out to be something of a paper tiger?

Yeah certainly are...Tyson supposedly read the works of Mao during his years in prison, and has spoken positively in the past about him. During a visit to China, Tyson talked about how he looked up to Mao...then he promoted a new restaraunt that he was paid to promote, and said Mao would have be pleased with it.

Tyson is indeed an interesting character. If I remember correctly he also has a tattoo of Che.

With regards to Attica, its amazing how its been all but wiped out of the American collective conscience. In fact, I wouldn't have remembered the anniversary of the uprising myself if it wasn't for this post.

Always nice to hear from new voices. Red Scare, I love your header graphic. It is possibly my favorite Soviet poster, ever. The original Russian is something to the effect of "smite/hit the lazy worker," is it not?

Nelson H. -- yup, you hit it right on the head. The original Russian does indeed say "smite the lazy worker." Haha, propaganda isn't nearly as cool today as it once was.

These sites have some really fantastic posters...

I experienced homelessness. Tyson was the hero of the streets, without doubt.

Tyson also has a tattoo of the Honorable Elijah Muhammed - on his back, if I'm not wrong.

Alas, old Mike seems to have misplaced his copy of Selected Readings. He is cited in today's news as holding a press conference announcing he might fight women boxers and pumping his endorsement of the Republicans' fairly loathesome Black candidate for Senate from Maryland.

"At the press conference, Tyson posed for photos with fans, signed autographs and campaigned for Maryland U.S. Senate candidate Michael Steele.

Tyson, wearing a white and blue Steele for U.S. Senate T-shirt, said he used to believe black Republicans were "sellouts." But Tyson said he changed his mind after researching the Maryland lieutenant governor.

"We have to open our eyes more," Tyson said, as he pointed to his T-shirt"
